Lansing School District Paying Substitute Teachers $300 Per Day
I'm writing this article because I really appreciate substitute teachers. It takes me back to my school days at Everett High School in Lansing and all the countless times we had substitute teachers for whatever reason.
Sometimes it was because our regular teacher would be feeling a bit under the weather or perhaps a teacher was on maternity leave and needed someone to fill in for her.
Regardless, there was never a shortage of substitute teachers like there is today. And even though there is a shortage, the Lansing School District is paying up to $300.00 a day.
According to the Lansing State Journal:
Lansing School District increased base substitute teacher pay from $150 a day to $200 a day this school year, and is offering $300 a day at schools with the most students, including Everett High School, Gardner International Magnet School and Dwight Rich School of Arts.
The bottom line here is that substitute teachers are more difficult to find these days. Some schools will actually have their principals fill in as substitute teachers become more scarce and hard to find.
The Lansing State Journal adds:
So far this year, the district has found a substitute about 70% of the time it needed one, according to Corbin. When it couldn't, it shuffled around physical education, art and other teachers who weren't teaching at the time to fill in.
I know a lot of teachers who have retired from Lansing Schools over the past several years and many of them informed me about how difficult it's been trying to find good substitute teachers.
Several Lansing area schools are offering incentives to substitute teachers as in more money and even free lunch at the school.
If you know someone who is looking to find a job as a substitute teacher, you might want to pass this information along and wish them good luck.
