What Is a Peanut Butter Burger, Anyway?

Yes, peanut butter on hamburgers is real, and they are delicious. If you've never had one, and you're making that face, nose scrunched up with your brow furled while shaking your head—don't knock it until you've tried it.

If you're looking to try your first-ever peanut butter hamburger, Lansing Brewing Company is a great first stop. Good beer, decent prices, and a very chill atmosphere. Their menu also boasts having "The Best Burgers in Lansing," which is a bold statement, and this was the first stop in my search for Michigan's finest peanut butter hamburger.

Size Matters

Would you look at the size of that burger! You need a good-sized bun and patty so that you don't get as much peanut butter on your hands when eating it. And you will get peanut butter on your hands.

The Velvet Peanut Butter Burger is served with pepper jack cheese, bacon, mayonnaise, and, of course, peanut butter. It sounds and reads like an odd flavor combination, but someone said that about Graham crackers, marshmallows, and chocolate once, and look how wrong they were.

It also comes with fries, which are amazing by the way, and will cost you $16.50 (plus tip, these kids work hard). But, is it worth it? Let's dive in.

Let's work our way top down. The bun was good, not great, but good. It was grilled to perfection and coated with warm, melty peanut butter. The burger was then topped with cheese, and the mayo was placed on the bottom bun, along with the bacon, which was cooked to perfection (floppy and chewy, the way God intended).

First Bite Impressions

The first bite was exactly what I expected at first, but then the bacon hit, countering the sweetness of the peanut butter with its salty goodness. Honestly, the pepper jack and mayo didn't even factor into the flavor for me.

If you do order this burger, come hungry. It proved to be too much for me, as I left a few bites in the basket (of course, I could have finished it if I hadn't laid waste to the fries, which are also good when dipped in peanut butter).

You're making that face again.

Final Verdict and Rating

On a scale of 1 to 5 napkins, I'd give Lansing Brewing Company's Velvet Peanut Butter Burger a solid 3.75. The flavor combinations work well, but they lean a little too heavily towards the salty end for my taste. Next time, I'll ask for extra peanut butter and mayo (and napkins). Worth a try for fans of peanut butter burgers and newbies alike.

Inside Lansing's Knapp's Department Store: See How it Looks Today

On what has been called a historical site long before the store was built, the land at 300 S Washington Avenue in downtown Lansing, Michigan, has been home to the Knapp's Department Store Building since 1937. After the fall of Knapp's in 1980, it found new life as offices for the State of Michigan. The top floors have been refurbished as offices and apartments, but a new project is underway in the former 1st floor and mezzanine thanks to the Eyde Company and Downtown Lansing Inc. Here's a look at how Knapp's Department store looks today.
