Michigan is fortunate to be the birthplace of, what in my opinion, is the greatest ice cream flavor ever created: Superman Ice Cream.

The Birthplace of Superman Ice Cream

Created during Prohibition in Detroit by the Stroh's Brewing Company, this icy treat has become a part of state lore. But if you are searching for the best experience with this iconic blend of flavors, there’s one brand that gets it right.

The Flavors Behind the Color

You see, true Superman ice cream is a mix of three different flavors. While one of the featured flavors is relatively consistent across different brands, the other two vary:

  1. Blue Moon
    1. If there is a moon made of this stuff, I'm moving there, because this stuff tastes like the milk left after eating a bowl of Fruit Loops.
  2. Red Pop / Black Cherry
    1. Thank Faygo for the Red Pop, which Feigenson Brothers created in Michigan in 1907. Most Superman ice creams have turned to Black Cherry, but if you can find a Red Pop, consider yourself lucky.
  3. Lemon / Vanilla / Banana
    1. It's tough to find a lemon-flavored ice cream in a Superman-themed ice cream, as many use vanilla and dye it yellow.

Unfortunately, finding this frozen treat with a yellow flavor other than vanilla is a challenge. Your best bet is to visit your local ice cream parlor (or the Jackson County Fair Ice Cream Barn during Fair Week), but if you're a fan of vanilla, there is one brand that rises above the rest.

Where to Find the Real Thing in Michigan

Hudsonville Ice Cream, made in Hudsonville, Michigan, produces what I feel is the best Superman; however, to avoid any messy copyright issues with DC Comics, they've opted to name their treat Super Scoop. A close second is Meijer's Purple Cow brand's Scooperman.

What's interesting about the Superman name is that the ice cream predates the character that first appeared in Action Comics in 1938 and shared the same color scheme as the superhero.

Beware of Impostors: When Vanilla Isn’t Enough

There are some shady ice cream sellers out there who try to pass off blue, red, and yellow dyed vanilla ice cream as Superman flavor, making them the Lex Luthor in the world of frozen dairy desserts.
