The First Cereal That Was Discontinued by Kellogg’s: 1895-1906
There have been many Kellogg’s cereals that have been discontinued over the years, including some you may remember:
Kellogg’s OKs, Concentrate, Frosted Rice, Pep, Puffa Puffa Rice and many others.
Cereals get terminated for a few reasons: not enough sales, it was a bad idea, and timeliness; meaning, a cereal like C3POs were only around when Star Wars was the hottest thing in the country. Once it died down, the cereal went away.
That brings us to the question: what was the first Kellogg’s cereal to be suspended? The answer is Granose Flakes.

This cereal was introduced in 1895 by Dr. John Kellogg. It was made accidentally by boiling wheat (and leaving it unattended overnight), running it through a pasta-flattener, and baked. Supposedly the first flake cereal ever made and pre-dating corn flakes, boxes of Granose Flakes were sold by Kellogg under a different company name: the Sanitas Food Company.
Once the Kellogg's Food Company was founded in 1906 (originally as the Battle Creek Toasted Corn Flake Company) it marked the beginning of the end of Granose Flakes. With production problems concerning the wheat, the formula was changed and corn was used instead of wheat. As popular as Granose Flakes were with the public, the corn flakes’ popularity exceeded it, becoming the most popular cereal in the world...and it still holds that title.
So with the life of Granose Flakes lasting only nine years, 1895-1906, it morphed its way into history with a change in name and ingredients.....and became the first Kellogg’s cereal to be discontinued.
