Jackson, Michigan Leaders Eliminate Free Parking in Downtown
Yikes. This one is going to be talked about for a long time. On Tuesday, March 12, 2025, the Jackson City Council approved adding parking meters to the downtown area in Jackson, Michigan. As someone who has lived downtown for several years, I can confidently say this is a divisive issue that will surely be met with less than cordial sentiments. To put it more simply, a very vocal group of people who hate this idea is about to make a lot of noise.

Under the current system, parking in downtown Jackson is free. However, most spots and lots have a two-hour time limit, so if you're working or shopping in downtown Jackson, you must move your car every two hours or get a ticket. You can also purchase access to various lots around the downtown center.
Jackson City Council Unanimously Approves Metered Parking in Downtown
Not only did the Jackson City Council approve metered parking for downtown Jackson, Michigan, but it was a unanimous decision. While City Council members may not have disapproved, Jackson County Commission Chair and downtown business owner Steve Shotwell took the opportunity during public comment at the March 12, 2025, council meeting to express his fears of the effects metered parking will have on his daily life.

Shotwell owns Miller Shoe Parlour and says, "My customers now have to pay an hourly fee shop and buy at my store when businesses outside of downtown Jackson offer free parking."
When the Free Ride Ends and Metered Parking Begins
The City of Jackson's resolution states that metered parking will begin on July 1, 2025, at a rate of $2 per hour per parking space. It will be handled by parking meter kiosks that accept cash or credit, and payment options will be available via a mobile app. All on-street spaces will be considered short-term parking, requiring an hourly fee. The upfront cost for the metered parking system and 47 touchscreen pay terminals? $466,710, paid to Total Parking Solutions.

Several lots will be designated for long-term use, meant for those who live and/or work in the downtown parking district. If you fail to feed the meter, you'll receive a ticket that totals $20 if paid within 48 hours, $36 if paid 48 hours to 7 days of the citation, and $56 after 7 days.
Long-Term Parking in Downtown Jackson Fees
The base rate for long-term parking will be $400 per month per space, but discounts will be applied for monthly and annual purchases, depending on the lot. Day passes are available for $10. Click here for the complete fee structure and to read the Jackson City Council's new parking resolution.
So, there are the facts. As for the fallout and vocal dissenters, I'll pop the popcorn and meet you on social media.
