Michigan City On Pace To Break Its Own Snowfall Record
Living in mid-Michigan, comfortably away from the full brunt of lake-effect snow and clinging to memories of when 6 inches of snow meant a 30-minute delay at best, it's been many years since I've been in awe of a snowstorm (Mother Nature and Old Man Winter, if you're reading this, that wasn't a challenge).

While a few cities in the Mitten have experienced some minor winter inconveniences, one is experiencing a bumper crop of snow that could break its annual snowfall record.
For reference, the current record snowfall for the State of Michigan belongs to Calumet, Michigan, which had 390.4 inches of snow dumped on them during the winter of 1978-79.

That's over 32 feet of snow in a single season. My back hurts just thinking about shoveling that much snow. Calumet immortalized that storm with what is possibly the world's largest snow gauge (see above).
Potentially Record-Breaking Year
During the winter of 2006-07, Gaylord, Michigan, set a new personal best for seasonal snowfall at 185.6 inches.

That's more than 15 feet of snow, which would be enough to bury a school bus if you stood it on end (again, Mother Nature and Old Man Winter, not a "Hold my Faygo" moment, please).
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), Gaylord has already dug itself out of 179.4 inches of snow as of February 20 during the winter of 2024-25. That's just 6.3 inches away from a record-breaking year. According to Weather Spark, that's very doable for this Northern Michigan city, as the average historical March snowfall is around 6.9 inches.
So, will Gaylord pop the cork on a frozen bottle of champagne later this year while celebrating another record for seasonal snowfall? We will just have to wait and see what Mother Nature and Old Man Winter have in store for Gaylord and the rest of Michigan as we sludge through the last third of winter.
