The Michigan Ghost Town of Fibre, in Chippewa County

Fibre is one of those lost Michigan towns that still legally exist, but you would never know it if you drove though...all that remains is an old store, railroad...and that's about it.

What we know about Fibre – and there is little – is that it began life as a railroad station in 1891 along the Minnesota, St. Paul & Sault Ste. Marie Railway.

A post office opened up on July 10, 1895 under the name 'Alberta' and changed the name to 'Fibre' on Jan 20, 1896. The post office lasted for years until it closed for good on June 10, 1985.

As for other businesses, there was the company of Pew & Parker, who manufactured ties, poles, posts & shingles in the early 1900s.

The general store more than likely operated with several owners over the years, calling itself Dowd's Store (and gas station) in the 1940s.

Fibre can be found in Chippewa County's Rudyard Township at the railroad crossing over Trout Lake Road.
