Could This be the Oldest Historical Home in Detroit?
It’s not one of the grander old mansions and castles that can be found throughout the city – it's just a meager little house that probably was lived in by people who could not afford much. It’s been nicknamed the East Forest Workers Home.
According to Sanborn Origins Fire Insurance via This Building Matters, this piece of land was empty in 1897. Although it looks suspiciously like the type of houses that were built in the 1880s, it’s been speculated that the house was later moved onto this property sometime around or after 1900.
At one time in 1921, three structures sat on this property, including the one that currently stands. The other two were a two-story building with two apartments and a one-story building.

Sometime after 1950, the house was in major disrepair; collapsing roof, falling stairs, etc. Demolition was scheduled and actually bpreparing for its destruction when someone decided to save it, purchasing the house and land. Some renovations were done, but will it be enough to appease the city and get it taken off the demolition list? Only time will tell.
One last thing: when this type of house was built, you could opt for a moat. That’s right – a moat, just like the ones found around medieval castles. Not as detailed as the old ones...just a small circle of water. That was about all these types of moats had to offer.
