I try my hardest to not pick favorites, but we all have one. What's your favorite dog breed? I love all dogs, but it's a tie between a Golden Retriever and a Bernese Mountain Dog. I mean come on, they're both beautiful!

Well, it looks like Detroit has a new favorite!

It may have taken a couple of years, but Rottweilers have finally claimed the top spot on the American Kennel Club's popular dog breed in Detroit. They were No. 2 for two consecutive years and AKC Executive Secretary, Gina DiNardo says she's happy to see the breed receive more love.

I’m excited to see the Rottweiler holding the top spot in this city for a change. Rottweilers are naturally playful, gentle and loving to their families. They also make a good guard dog.

As we know, there are some breeds that have a bad rep. Some communities have a ban on Rottweilers. According to AHHA, Rottweilers are one of the top breeds responsible for dog bites. In 2019, Pit Bulls had the highest number. Because of the breeds territorial instincts, the AKC does recommend early training and socialization.

I'm really not surprised that the French Bulldog came in as the second most popular dog breed in Detroit and nationwide. They're just too darn cute.

Regardless of the breed, having worked in the veterinary field for several years, every breed has their pros and cons. What it comes down to is the amount of work you, as their owner, put in. You have to be willing to be patient and properly train them for them to have a successful relationship with you and others around you.

Here's a list of the top 5 dog breeds in Detroit and nationwide from the Detroit Freepress.

Detroit's top breeds in 2020:

  1. Rottweiler
  2. French Bulldog
  3. German Shepherd
  4. Golden Retriever
  5. Bulldog

Popular breeds nationwide"
