Consumers Energy Wants Another Rate Hike—Before the First One Even Hits Your Bill
Everything in Michigan is more expensive now. Groceries? Up. Gas? Of course. That random thing you used to buy all the time without giving it a second thought? Somehow, it now requires a credit check and a financial planning session. So naturally, just to keep the streak alive, your electric bill is stepping up to join the chaos.

According to a press release from the Michigan Department of Attorney General, Consumers Energy has announced plans to seek another electric rate hike... just seven days after its last one was approved by the Michigan Public Service Commission.
The Hike You Haven’t Even Felt Yet
The most recent increase totals $276.6 million and takes effect May 1, 2026. Since 2020, Michigan officials have approved nearly $800 million in annual revenue increases for Consumers Energy.

According to the Michigan Department of Attorney General, that same approval allows the energy giant to lock in a 9.9% return on equity, meaning the company profits on new infrastructure projects... while customers continue to stare at their rising bills in disbelief.
And Now... Another One
Before that first increase even hits your bill, Consumers Energy is already preparing its next rate hike request, expected to be filed in June. We don't have the exact number yet, but the last time they asked, it was $436 million plus a $24.3 million surcharge, which would've driven residential bills up about 13%.

Attorney General Dana Nessel says her office will challenge the request again, arguing the system keeps squeezing customers who are already feeling the financial pinch everywhere else. Meanwhile, other utilities are lining up similar moves. Your electric bill hasn't even gone up yet... and it's already preparing to go up again.
