1966: Mom Gives Birth in Motel Driveway, Dad Looks on in Panic
Another of rustic Michigan’s old roadside motels is the Abode Motel, once located at 6510 Fenton Road, in Fenton.
The Abode opened in the 1950s as a seven-unit overnight rental, originally operated by Charles and Eva Clark, followed by Donald and Ellen Granbush.
For a brief time, a flea market operated from the building...but the one thing that makes teh Abode stand out from others is the baby that was born in a car sitting in the motel driveway. The birth took place in 1966 and made the state newspapers.

At about 8:30 in the morning, the motel owner heard a wild screech of tires and the sound of someone frantically honking the car horn in the driveway. Upon running outside, he found the father in a state of panic, and looking as if he probably needed to change his underwear. Two minutes later, the baby was born. Mama and baby ended up being just fine. Pop, however, probably needed a shot of something
The Abode Motel is now gone, demolished somewhere between 2012 and 2018. The former owner’s house is still there but just a bare spot where the motel once stood. Photos in the gallery below show when the motel still stood as well as how the property looks now.
