If you recently received a text claiming you owe a toll and that if you don't pay ASAP, your license will be suspended, congratulations! You've been targeted by the latest scam to hit Michigan. As you'll see below, I was. The FasTrak text scam, which, according to Top Side Federal Credit Union, has been working mainly on the West Coast, has made it to the Mitten State.

How the Scam Works

You'll receive a text (like the one I received below) claiming you have unpaid tolls. Usually, living in Michigan, I wouldn't have given this a second thought, but late last year, my wife and I went to Pittsburgh and used toll roads. I nearly clicked on the link until I looked at the phone number.

It's a good thing I didn't click it, as according to Newsweek, clicking that link could have resulted in stolen personal information, a drained bank account, and/or several months of reclaiming my identity.

Red Flags That Scream "Scam"

As I said, the FasTrak text scam nearly got me until I looked at the number it came from (see screenshot above): +63 998 487 6208. The "+63" immediately tipped me off, and I later learned that the exchange means the number is in the Philippines. I know I haven't been on any Philippine toll roads lately

Here's a look at warning signs you're being targetted for the FasTrak or any text scams:

  • The text is from an oddball number
  • The message is riddled with typos, or it's a weird format
  • You don't recall or haven't been on a toll road—because Michigan, other than bridges and tunnels, doesn't charge tolls
  • If you click on the link, the site looks sketchy, like it was built by a 5-year-old

If you receive this scam text, mark it as junk, delete it, and report it to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). You may also want to alert your family and friends, especially the most trusting ones.
