Hough Bakeries had various locations throughout northeast Ohio, founded by Lionel A. Pile around 1903 on Hough Avenue. With the success of the place, by the 1930s he soon expanded with bakeries in E. Cleveland and Cleveland Heights. The location seen in the gallery below - 1519 Lakeview Rd  - was purchased in 1941 when it was called the Star Bakery plant.

In 1945 it was re-christened as the Hough Bakery Company, changing to Hough Bakeries in 1952. They also did catering beginning in 1930 and by 1956 Hough Caterers, Inc. was established. In the 1980s, it had 28 branch stores, 14 supermarkets, and other outlets throughout the area.

Hough’s downfall came about when he ignored modernizing his business. Competitors were using better equipment and were able to sell their goods for less money, and Hough just couldn’t keep up. After failed attempts at acquiring financial assistance, the operations – all 32 stores and the headquarters on Lakeview Road - closed down in August 1992. See photos in the gallery below.
