Many of the old buildings along Chene Street in Detroit have been demolished; and it's only a matter of time before the former Max's Jewelry Store will also fall.

Originally called Fredal's Jewelers, Max's Jewelry Store is located at 5553 Chene Street. It opened in 1927 and amazingly is still upright, having lasted longer than the others that once stood next door. The vertical “Max's” sign makes it look like it was once a theater; in fact, it was used as a mock theater in one of the “Transformers” movies.

Max's opened in 1927; forty years later during the summer of '67 riots the store was looted and vandalized – by friends of the owner. This caused Max much dismay and carried that with him until he passed away in 1980. The store closed permanently in the 1990s.

Since then, looters and vandals have entered and scrapped the place, the roof partially collapsed, and a fire broke out in 2012. Get photos while you can.....no doubt it is marked for demolition soon.
