The Ghost Town of Wildwood: Cheboygan County, Michigan

Wildwood in Cheboygan County has been called a ghost town, but it seems more of a shadow town to me – a town that is a shadow of its former self.

It began as a little hamlet called Mentor Corners in Mentor Township, but was most commonly known as just plain 'Mentor'. A post office opened in 1882 and the name was finally changed to 'Wildwood' in 1884.

A little handful of businesses popped up including a few stores and a blacksmith. A lone abandoned church sits out in the countryside along a dirt road, a relic that once upon a time held prayer meetings and services for the townfolk of Wildwood.

Now most of the residents have vanished, but there are a number of them that remain. Sometimes hard to find on certain maps, but it would be worth a stop on a Michigan ghost town tour. There are a few homes left but not much else except that old deserted church.
