Why Michiganders May Be Able To Hunt This Animal Soon

Hunting season is here and here and earlier in the week I was telling you it'll cost you $5 for a chance at one of only 300 tags to hunt Michigans elk. which will be between 900 and 1,500 says the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. Check it out here if you missed it.

So check this out because you may not like this, Michigan lawmakers are trying to pass a resolution that let folks hunt Eastern Sandhill Cranes according to wilx.com. They say the cranes are overpopulated and a problem for Farmers.

These Are Good Lookin Birds

They are pretty birds with bright red foreheads and sandy gray feathers, the Eastern Sandhill Cranes have really populated the last few years.

Heather Good, executive director of the Michigan Audubon, says that the bird is believed to be one of the oldest living avian species in North America. Many people are connected with Michigan’s native wildlife and a species as old and as treasured as the sandhill crane is important to a lot of people and a lot of groups.

In case you wondering you can eat Eastern Sandhill Cranes. Hunters say they taste like pork chops, so the birds are not just killed and can be eaten. 

What The Population Is Now

So the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Guidelines states that the population of cranes needs to be above 30 thousand to be hunted. The Michigan Department of Natural Resources says Michigan alone has between 20 thousand and 25 thousand Cranes.

Eastern Sandhill Cranes are not close to endangerment but personally, I could not shoot one.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources says implementing a Sandhill Crane hunt is not a high priority within their department and also would take time and would not be approved for this hunting season.
