What Time’s Dinner and Who’s Coming to Michigan Thanksgivings?

It seems we are buying some big birds that need some time to cook because according to the survey the majority of Michigan's Thanksgiving Day meal is prepared in the morning and served in the afternoon. The turkey hit the table in the most Mitten State homes between 2 and 4 according to wedding planning site The Loupe.

This holds in our family and it's not uncommon to show up an hour or two before mealtime. What do we do for that time? What Michiganders do.

The Importance of Pre-Thanksgiving Day Snacks and Their Placement

I cannot emphasize the importance of snacks before Thanksgiving in Michigan. How else can we guarantee that we eat ourselves into a food-baby-induced coma without snacks? Plus, as any good host knows, snacks keep people out of the kitchen but don't use the good silver for that course, grazers get paper plates.

If you are serving appetizers to keep people out of the kitchen then make sure to place them as far away from your culinary space as possible. If you put snacks in the garage they will be found and more than likely consumed there with or without heat and without question.

Who is Coming to Thanksgiving in Michigan

While America is split on inviting friends and extended family, on average Michigan natives prefer a big event feel to their festivities and that's why I love it. Our traditional family Thanksgiving is still held on the family farm in Mason, in the house where my grandfather was born.

I remember the dinner happening in 3 different rooms at 5 different tables. Aging out of the kids' table and graduating to the main table was something to look forward to. Traditions change, but I'll never forget going from milk to a fancy glass of water. Happy Thanksgiving Michigan!
