Like an old 60s song 0nce stated, “summer means fun”. It also means dragstrips, if you’re fortunate to have one nearby.

One dragstrip that doesn’t seem to get enough media exposure (at least, to my knowledge) is the West Michigan Sand Dragway in Mears, Oceana County. It’s an all-dirt, clay & sand dragstrip located at 7186 W. Deer Road.

The West Michigan Sand Dragway opened in 1983, and is regarded as one of the top sand dragstrips in the country. If your curiosity prods you into driving over to the west side of Michigan to check out this dragstrip, it’s open from May to October with approximately 13 races each season.

The strip brings racers from Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Missouri and a good many other nearby states just to race their cars, ATVs, funny cars, customs, buggies, coupes and dragsters – many reaching 120 MPH or over in under three seconds.....on sand, even!

It’s a good way to spend a summer or early fall afternoon, in a family-based atmosphere. Relax, enjoy some snacks and refreshments, enjoy the weather and sit back for an afternoon at the drags. Take a look at some images in the gallery below as well as its location...
