A 5 foot long, 100 pound alligator named Wally died early Thursday morning after being struck by a vehicle at West Mount Hope Highway and South Creyts Road.

According to the Lansing State Journal, the 21 year old alligator was hit at about 12:33 a.m. after the pet apparently got loose from a Delta Township family's home.

A woman driving to work Thursday morning saw the alligator and called police.  Police aren't aware of any injuries to motorists or pedestrians at the time of the incident.

The alligator's body was taken Thursday by animal control officers to a facility in Eaton County and is expected to be buried off-site.
