The United Auto Workers union wants Detroit's big three automakers to shut down their factories for 2 weeks to keep its members safe from the spreading coronavirus.

The Union's President Rory Gamble said in an email to members, that was obtained by the Associated Press, that the companies were not willing to shut those factories down.

Gamble says the union gave General Motors, Ford and Fiat Chrysler two days to put together plans to safeguard its workers. That period ended yesterday afternoon. The companies and the Union were to meet last night to discuss safety measures.

The UAW and automakers agreed to a partial plant shutdown to curtail the coronavirus.  The big three and Detroit car companies did reach agreements on coronavirus mitigation efforts. For now that will avoid a two week shutdown.

The United Auto Workers have been posting on Facebook, urging the big three to "put its members first."
