The Coolest Movie Car EVER Will Be Auctioned This Friday

Probably the best car-chase scene in the history of movies is from the 1968 movie "Bullitt", starring Steve McQueen. In the movie, McQueen is Lt. Frank Bullitt with the San Francisco police. As he's driving the hilly streets of San Francisco in his green, 1968 Ford Mustang fastback, Steve notices two bad guys in a black, Dodge Charger RT following him. A chase ensues, with McQueen eventually getting behind the Charger. The cars were cool, the camera work made you feel like you were driving the Mustang and, in the end (spoiler alert), the Charger crashes and blows up. It's ten minutes in a movie, but it made everybody who saw the scene want a '68 Mustang fastback. (I have to admit - it also made me want a '68 Charger, too)

According to the New York Times, the original Mustang used in the chase scenes is up for auction this Friday. It's belonged to a family in New Jersey since 1974. Bob Kiernan bought it for $3,500 after seeing it offered in a classified ad in "Road and Track' magazine. Bob gave it to his wife to drive around town, until the clutch went and they parked it. Bob's gone now, but his son Sean will put it up for auction with Mecum Auctions, in Kissimmee, Florida on Friday. The auction will be live on NBCSN-TV (my info is it'll be sometime in the afternoon).

There were two identical cars used in the filming of the movie. One was beefed up and used for the real chase-scene driving - the "hero car". The other was for interior shots. Someone found the "interior shot" car in Mexico and restored it. The "hero car" was actually driven by McQueen and is considered more valuable.

It may go for as much as $5 million. If I win the lottery this week, you'll know where to find me.
