Michigan’s 11 State Holidays in 2025: Do You Get These Days Off?
Do we get any additional time off this year? Though it may seem like a silly question, it's not, given that the powers-that-be in Lansing added a new state holiday (Juneteenth) to Michigan's calendar as recently as June 2023. So, will we get more time to spend on the beach, hitting the slopes, or DIYing at home in 2025?

Here's a look at 11 holidays officially acknowledged by the State of Michigan.
The Usual Suspects
Your standard lineup of federally recognized holidays is here to stay:
- New Year's Day
- January 1
- Martin Luther King Jr. Day
- January 20
- Presidents' Day
- February 17
- Memorial Day
- May 26
- Juneteenth
- June 19
- Independence Day
- July 4
- Labor Day
- September 1
- Veterans Day
- November 11
- Thanksgiving
- November 27
- Christmas Day
- December 25
While State of Michigan employees will enjoy each of these days off, they also get the day after Thanksgiving off (Friday, November 28), which not every employer in the Mitten State provides and brings the grand total to 11. Many of us sit in an office or shop twiddling our thumbs the day after Turkey Day.
State of Michigan Employees Get an Additional Day Off Every Other Year
Every other year, the State of Michigan employees are given the entire day off—to vote. So, while the rest of us hustle to cast our ballot before work, during lunch, or in between kids' activities in the evening, state employees have all the time in the world.
What About New Holidays?
Drumroll...and no. Michigan did NOT add any new state holidays, nor did the feds. But that doesn't mean there isn't room for more. How about everybody in Michigan gets the day off to show people where we live? We'll call it "Point at Your Hand Day." Or a "Congrats, You've Made it Halfway Through Winter Day."

Alas, 2025 is business as usual. Keep your PTO balance stocked up for emergencies, such as extra-long weekends or "mental health" days spent fishing, shopping, or lounging.
