Kalamazoo’s Slide-Away Park has been closed, abandoned, and neglected for years. The lone reminder of the park, the go-kart track, still sits…..hidden back in the brush in Alamo Township, next to Cooper on D Avenue.

It closed down sometime between the late 1980’s and early 1990’s. It had a couple of large water slides that were made of heavy concrete. You’d sit on thick pads so you wouldn’t scrape the cement, but you did anyway…and many kids ended up with bloody body parts.

There were concessions, and – I believe – mini-golf. Right? Weren’t there some little kid rides there? Closeby was a large roller rink and the 131 Drive-in Movie Theater was just six miles north. The Kalamazoo Speedway was just a couple of blocks east.

So anyone could spend a whole day in the area doing something without getting bored: amusement park, speedway, then go to a late movie. It's sad that it had to close down.
