Several Michigan Beaches Closed Due to Contamination

The only beach I plan on visiting very soon is Stearns beach in Ludington. It's one of the most beautiful beaches I've ever seen in Michigan, even though there are many beaches to choose from.

Currently there are at least nine Michigan beaches that are officially closed, which are under contamination advisories for bacteria. This certainly doesn't sound good.

According to mlive.com:

The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy’s Beach Guard system posts notifications of beach closures and contamination advisories for high bacteria levels. More than 1,200 public beaches and nearly 600 private beaches are monitored.

Many of these beaches are closed because of high bacteria levels. A few of the closed beaches in Michigan are Lake Superior, Head of the Bay in Baraga County.

Another beach area is Grand Traverse Bay West Arm, at Volleyball Court Beach in Grand Traverse County. And there are several more with advisories as of July 8.

The Beach Guard site gives the public information on beach water quality across the state. It includes water sampling results and daily updates on which beaches are under advisories or have been closed. The data covers 1,224 public beaches and 575 private ones.

I was reading about different causes of contamination and found it to be somewhat disgusting, so I thought I would do you a favor and not mention it in this article.

Because it's summer and people look forward to going to the beach on weekends, it's good knowing which beaches are safe and which ones are not.
