Tell you what, if you love fried fish, fries, coleslaw, tarter sauce, and even hush puppies, then by all means, you're going to love this place.

I work with Deb, who is one of my co-workers, and she lives for this place. Deb and her husband Keith, drive all the way up to Mackinaw City every summer from Dimondale and have a quality dinner from Scalawags Whitefish & Chips.

For these two, it's like a fish and chips ritual. Deb and Keith go at least ten times every summer to get their fill of delicious fried whitefish along with fries, and whatever else they choose to eat.

As for my wife and I, we met Deb and Keith at Scalawags once and had a fried fish dinner.   Was it good? Yes. Was it great? no. But who cares about my opinion.

What do others have to say about Scalawags Whitefish & Chips in Mackinaw City? Here are a few of the reviews that we found.

1. One person was so happy because they made her a broil fish taco and the chef was very nice about it.

2. Another person thinks the fish is great but the chowder and coleslaw need some serious adjustments.

3. Another review said great food and great service.

4. And oh yeah, here's one more. If the fish were any fresher they would still be swimming.

According to tripadvisor.com:

At Scalawags Whitefish & Chips, we are dedicated to serving you the freshest Great Lakes whitefish, perch and walleye harvested from the Great Lakes in a friendly, nautical atmosphere at affordable prices. The restaurant is open May through October every year. Dine in or carry out.

There you have it, Scalawags Whitefish & Chips, serving customers since 1992 and still going strong. It wouldn't surprise me someday to find out that my co-worker Deb ends up retiring and moves with her husband to Mackinaw City to be closer to her favorite eatery.
