Thirsty Christmas Trees and Burning Candles Don't Mix in Michigan
By the time Christmas Eve rolls around, everyone is so focused on the event that they sometimes fail to think straight. Those candles may look better on the table closest to your Christmas tree but stop and think for a second. Tree + Candle = Fire.

And if you're thinking "Oh I'm right here, I'll be able to handle a tree fire", watch the following 34-second video.
After watching that ask yourself, "When was the last time I watered my tree?". Here are 5 safety tips on preventing holiday fires from the Michigan Fire Marshall:
- Keep a cleared space of three feet around your space heater to avoid any object that can burn, including people.
- Never sleep with your space heater on; Utilize only when you are awake.
- Unplug space heaters when leaving the room.
- Never smoke in bed; keep lighters and cigarettes away from children.
- If you smoke, put your cigarette or cigar out all the way, every time.
You'll also want to check and change your smoke detector batteries before the big day and be sure you know where your fire extinguishers are and that they are easy to get to in the event of an emergency.
