According to the Lansing State Journal, Lansing will begin selling permits next year that will allow people to park their cars overnight on city streets.

I've been in this situation before where I had to leave my car parked all night long on city streets and I'm sure I received a few parking tickets for doing so.

A Lansing ordinance bans on street parking between 2 a.m. and 5 a.m., although the city has not always enforced the prohibition.

A new system, set to take effect on March 1, will create an exception to the ban for people who purchase permits.

City Council members expect Lansing will enforce its overnight parking rules more consistently once permits go on sale in 2020.

The council voted Monday night to approve the new system. An annual parking permit for a resident will cost $125.

So far this fiscal year, the city has cited more than 185 people for overnight parking. That compares to 1,259 citations the previous year.
