The 2023 - 2024 Ohio whitetail deer season has officially wrapped, concluding with the end of the Disease Surveillance Area (DSA) season on February 4th. Before we look at this year's total, let's take a look at the 2022 - 2023 totals.

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (DNR) requires all whitetail hunters to report their harvest using their Online Game Check system. According to the data gathered, the 2022 - 2023 season saw a total of 210,977 deer harvested, 124,332 of which were antlerless.

You read that right, 58% of Ohio's whitetail deer harvest were does. How does the Ohio DNR manage to keep the buck numbers in check, while also managing the overall population of deer? It's simple.

Ohio limits hunters to just 1 buck tag. The statewide limit is six deer, with some counties limiting the harvest to 2 or 3. Ohio hunters can take six deer if they live in a restricted county, but they'll have to go to a non-restricted county to do so.

The 2023 - 2024 season saw the same balance as the year before and even experienced an increase in the total harvest, even with fewer deer being taken during archery season when compared to the 2022-2023 whitetail season.
