It has been tradition for Michigan State to play their opening game on the Friday before Labor Day, regardless if it's in East Lansing or someplace else.  In 2021, they played their opener at Northwestern.  They have played on the Friday before Labor Day in ten of the last twelve seasons.

The Spartans finished the 2021 season at 11-2 with victories over Big Ten champ Michigan and Penn State as well as a win over Pittsburgh in the Chick-Fil-A Peach Bowl on December 30th.  State ended up ranked 9th in the Associated Press and 8th in the AFCA Coaches Poll.

The Western Michigan game is the first of seven home games for the Spartans in 2022.  Other home games this coming season are:  Saturday, September 10th vs. Akron, September 24th against Minnesota, October 8th vs. Ohio State, October 15th vs. Wisconsin, November 12th against Rutgers, and finally, November 19th against Indiana (In the battle for the Old Brass Spittoon).
