After some of what I would call the most courageous research ever, we now know which of Michigan's many rivers is the most snake-infested in the state. On behalf of those of us who fear animals who lack legs yet have the ability to move (very fast) on land, let's just go ahead and put a pin in this location now and mark it "NOPE."

Why? If I go for a swim, the last thing I want to do is spend my time in the water looking for Satan's pool noodles. And before you say, "Oh, they're more afraid of you than you are of them," let me say no, no, they are not.

A-ZAnimals, a wealth of information on Michigan wildlife, used data gathered from iNaturalist.org snake sightings to determine which flowing body of water has the most Murder Spaghetti writhing around in it.

Running over 130 miles from swamp to Great Lake, Michigan's river with the highest population of fanged caution tape is slow-moving, which makes it great for lazy floats down the water, canoe trips, and paddle board trips. However, this speed also makes the Huron River a popular destination for a wide variety of snake species in Michigan.

There are two Huron Rivers in Michigan, with the one that isn't the most snake-infested in the state in the Upper Peninsula. That means the Lower Peninsula's Huron River has the highest density of fanged caution tape in the Mitten.

What kind of snakes? Nonvenomous species like Dekays brownsnake, garter snakes, and northern watersnakes. AND a healthy population of Michigan's only venomous snake, the Eastern Massasauga Rattlesnake.  So, before you jump first and ask questions later when trying to cool off in the Huron River, check for snakes...lots of snakes. I won't be seeing you there. Nope. Just nope.
