It’s not the most pleasant of topics, but that question was put to me by a listener/reader and I said I would do my best to pinpoint Michigan’s Smelliest Counties.

I hesitate to do this, because I am fond of every single county in our state, as each has something unique to offer the rest of us. So, without further ado (or is that ‘adieu’?), here’s what the internet claims are the smelliest counties in Michigan.

So wait a minute...how can a landfill smell bad?

Well, it’s the gases that are released, thanks to organic decomposition due to bacteria that breaks down the waste . The gases are well-known for their offensive odors: ammonia, hydrogen sulfide, ammonia, and methane. Methane is basically odorless until it mixes with the others and then makes the smell much worse.

I’m surprised Wayne County wasn’t mentioned, as it is home to the industrial site, Zug Island.

All that being said, it's basically impossible to name the "smellliest" county in Michigan, as odors and people’s perceptions change almost daily. But this is what we have.
