1 in 10 Michiganders Use This PIN—Do You?
My brain's so full it might as well be a car packed for a vacation by a Michigan dad—efficient, but absolutely no room for anything new. Most of our heads are consumed with remembering kids' schedules, road trip snacks, and the Wi-Fi at your in-laws' cottage. We are just one new password away from a total system crash.
The Most Michigan Memory Fail
I learned this lesson the hard way at the Westside Community YMCA in Lansing. I bought a bright red padlock (cause sometimes I forget which locker is mine) and memorized the three-digit combo. I even put it in my password app—on my phone.

Fast forward to post-workout. I'm standing in nothing but a towel, fresh from the shower, when my mind goes blank. Combo? Gone. Phone? Locked. In the very locker I'm trying to open. Pants? Also in there, mocking me from the other side.

After several tense moments staring into the void and wondering how best to ask a stranger for help while mostly naked, I remembered that I'd inverted the numbers. Crisis averted, but it's left me doubting my memory.
How Most PINs Are Chosen
While a combination lock typically comes with a predetermined PIN, others can be personalized. PINs, like our ATM or computer codes, are chosen by us in the hope that we can remember them, while also keeping others out of our money and personal business.
