Which County Has Been Named “the Most Obese” in Michigan?
What is the Most Obese County in Michigan?
Just off the top of my head, when I hear that question I immediately think of Wayne or Oakland County which encompass Detroit. I mean, it makes sense: Detroit has great food all over the place: pizza, burgers, Mexican food, Greek food, Chinese food, soul food, bakeries...plus they manufacture pop, potato chips, and candy. So it's only natural that I would think that. But I am not even close.
The most obese county in Michigan – according to Mlive – is Saginaw County, followed closely by the counties of Clare, Montcalm, Hillsdale, Isabella, Gratiot, and Baraga.
Out of Michigan's 83 counties, only four were at or below the obesity rate: Washtenaw, Oakland, Leelanau, and Ottawa. Not a very good track record...Michigan has exceeded the national average of obesity for over thirty consecutive years! In 1990 the obesity rate was 14.1%...by 2010 it was up to 31.7%.
Nationally, Michigan comes in at #35 among the 50 states in obesity, all based on height, weight, and a body mass index of 30 or higher. Also according to Mlive, "Obesity and high body fat are known to correlate with diseases and health conditions like diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, liver disease, osteoarthritis, stroke and certain cancers.”
So no matter which of Michigan's wonderful counties you live in, do your best to stay healthy. We need you to stick around.
