I know it may sound absurd, but I've met people who have given more consideration to a used car purchase than their education. When it comes to a decision as monumental as choosing an institution of higher learning, sometimes it's good to lean on the experts. Fortunately, the financial gurus at WalletHub have done the legwork and looked at over 800 schools nationwide, including 17 in Michigan that made the top 500.

To say that I was surprised to see the ranking would be an understatement. While I expected to see the school that landed as Michigan's top college or university, I was shocked to see how low some other institutions ranked, given their reputation.

Whether you're a Knight, a Wolverine, a Bulldog, a Huskie, a Panther, a Flying Dutchman, a Hornet, or a Spartan, you'll find your school on the list. Whether or not you agree with the ranking is another story. But it's hard to argue with the rankings when you understand how they came to their conclusion.

While WalletHub took student life and campus safety into consideration, they also looked at how selective the enrollment is, the cost and financing options, and even career outcomes after graduation.

Looking at it now, even as an adult whose college years are well behind him, this is a daunting process, and I can't imagine there are many high school seniors confidently making an informed decision without studies like this.
