The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is reminding Mid-Michigan commuters and travelers alike: US-127 northbound, between I-96 and I-496, is closing. Wow. This isn't going to be fun.

Northbound US-127, between I-96 and I-496, will completely shut down beginning March 11, 2024, and remain closed through November. This drastic measure is necessary as this isn't a repair project, this is a complete rebuild and redesign meant to address traffic flow and increase safety.

MDOT plans to add a third lane to southbound US-127 to accommodate the northbound traffic. Additionally, the lanes will shift with the traffic flow. In the mornings, northbound traffic will have two lanes and the southbound traffic will have two lanes for the afternoon commute.

Rebuilding US-127 in Lansing IS NOT a Quick Project

As you can imagine, this length of highway needs some TLC. No less than 18 bridges along this corridor will be repaired, widened, or completely rebuilt over the next 2 years. The northbound Trowbridge exit will also get a much-needed redesign but, that means there will be NO access to Trowbridge northbound for all of 2024.

In addition to Trowbridge, there will be NO access for northbound traffic to Dunkel Road until mid-June. This area sees a lot of traffic, so expect delays not only in the construction zones but also on the routes that avoid the highway. Oh! And once this is done, MDOT plans to do the same thing in 2025 by closing the southbound lane. It's gonna be a long 2 years, but imagine how nice it will be once it's done.
