Well, let's hope Michigan has gotten that out of its system. Mother Nature was in a mood on March 30, 2025, and as a result, the Mitten State received its annual average of tornadoes in just 24 hours.

The National Weather Service (NWS) has now confirmed that 14 tornadoes touched down across Lower Michigan on March 30, 2025. That's right, 14. Michigan typically averages 16 per year, so either we're done with twisters until 2026 (unlikely), or this tornado season is gonna be a wild ride.

CBS News reports that tornadoes rolled through nine different Michigan counties in a storm system that made the state look like your weatherman's nightmare bingo card:

  • Kent County took the prize for most tornado touchdowns with four
  • Ingham, Ionia, and Cass Counties each had two twisters
  • Monroe, Newaygo, Shiawassee, and St. Joseph Counties each had one

The tornadoes were mostly on the weaker end of the scale—EF-0s and EF-1s according to the NWS—but still managed to snap trees, rip off roof chunks, and scatter patio furniture like all of Lower Michigan had a yard sale.

The fine folks at Michigan.gov/MiReady want you to be ready next time nature decides to cosplay as a Michael Bay film. How? Put together a NWS-approved tornado kit, including the following:

  • Water: a three-day supply for your entire family
  • Clothing and Footwear: at least one change of clothes
  • Blankets and Sleeping Bags
  • First Aid Kit and Prescription Drugs
  • Radio: for the latest updates and a NOAA Weather Radio
  • Flashlights and Batteries (more batteries than you think you need)
  • Cash or Credit Card
  • Spare Set of Keys

The NWS also recommends having any special equipment you may need to care for an infant or senior in your shelter. And when it comes to shelter, stay away from windows. Think basements, interior rooms, and definitely not in the garage or shed in which you store pitchforks.
