Were it not for the sleeping pill Ambien and its side effects, I would have thought that sleepwalking was something that only Goofy did in Disney Cartoons. The "Nocturnal Stroll" has always been a favorite bit for sitcoms. There's even an episode of The Honeymooners from November of '55 entitled "The Sleepwalker".

Though it has been a source of big laughs, legitimate sleepwalking has a profound physical and mental impact on the individual diagnosed with the condition and those closest to them. Why wake up a sleeper who might just be trying to get a jump on their 10,000 steps?

The sleep gurus at MattressNext Day took a deep dive into sleepwalking and its effects. They spoke with Amy Graham, who has been dealing with the condition for several years, and asked how it has changed her day-to-day life:

It certainly has a notable impact on my relationships because I find it necessary to forewarn my loved ones about the possibility of sleepwalking and potential disruptions to their sleep. Consequently, they often endure restless nights when I'm in the midst of a sleepwalking episode.

Have you ever heard the myth that you should never wake a sleepwalker? It's just that, a myth. According to Northwestern Medicine, if you see someone sleepwalking, YOU SHOULD wake them up, as they are in danger of hurting themselves or others. The easiest way to redirect a sleepwalker is to gently guide them back to bed.

Graham went on to say that one of the questions she asked most often is how her partner handles her sleepwalking. She explained that it can cause some very awkward situations

There have been instances where I've startled my partners awake, leading to less-than-pleasant experiences for all involved

Graham is not alone and neither are you if you deal with the condition. MattressNextDay reports that there are 128,000 sleepwalk-related searches per month. Let's take a look at which Michigan cities do the most searching for sleepwalking terms.
