9 Ways To Ruin a Michigan Thanksgiving Dinner
Thanksgiving in Michigan is a time for turkey, pie, and swearing at the Lions (fingers crossed this year, though). It's a time for family and friends and dodging topics that, if brought up, have the potential to ruin your Thanksgiving dinner.

Whether you're looking to maintain a peaceful gathering or you want to start a food fight, here are 9 topics you should NEVER bring up at a Thanksgiving dinner in Michigan.
1. Asking Anyone, "When Are You Getting Married?"
Oh, the classic line, "So, when's the big day?" is usually dropped by an aunt with a huge mole. This is a fast track to awkward silence, side-eyes, and someone grabbing another glass of wine.
2. Politics
Nothing, and I mean nothing, spoils a holiday faster than a heated discussion about elections, laws, or parties. Pass the potatoes, not the political opinions.
3. Talking Money with Family
Discussing income, investments, or that "amazing" crypto opportunity? Yeah, no thanks. Thanksgiving is about stuffing your face, not your financial opinions, down others' throats.
4. The Host's Decor
Nothing makes for an uncomfortable dinner more than an insulted host who thinks they're Martha Stewart. Here's the rule when going to someone else's house for the holidays: Everything is Awesome. Period.
5. Commentary on the Food
The turkey could have the same consistency as sandpaper, the stuffing could be so dry and arid you'll be thirsty for a year—but you say NOTHING. Nothing. Those are inside thoughts, and they don't go outside. Ever.

6. Road Construction
Want to talk about Michigan roadwork? Say goodbye to light, casual conversation and hello to an increasingly louder debate on "where all our tax dollars are going."
7. Hunting Stories
Unless your host killed the turkey themselves or they are serving a side of opossum, hunting stories are best saved for after dinner, during the Lions games commercials.
8. Winter
Look, Michigan winters are brutal. If the topic is brought up, chances are you'll hear your uncles battle about who's shoveled more snow or which one broke what when they slipped on the ice.
9. Family Drama and Trauma
While it is not usually discussed at a Michigan Thanksgiving dinner, it will come up if you bring up any of the above or the other topics that you know will touch someone's hair trigger, and you know what happens from there.
