The Oldest Common Loons on Earth Have Returned to Michigan
“Norman...the loons!”
Not just any loons...but the world's two oldest documented common loons are back home in the Upper Peninsula.
Every summer, the loons known as ABJ (the male) and Fe (pronounced 'fay', the female) return to breed within the Seney National Wildlife Refuge, as they have done every year since 1997.
According to Mlive, ABJ is “the oldest common loon of known age on Earth”. Fe, on the other hand, is believed to be at least one year older than ABJ, but there is no definite proof.
ABJ and Fe are just two of many loons that are banded and tracked each year.....and now they're back. Many people have heard of loons, but less have actually seen one. This would be a good opportunity to see some in person!
The Seney National Wildlife Refuge is located at 1674 Refuge Entrance Rd. in Seney.
