What Are Michigan’s Favorite Dog Breeds?
The American Kennel Club (AKC) has released the The Most Popular Dog Breeds list for 2022 and there is a new top dog!
Americans are saying 'Oui' to the French Bulldog. This is the first time in the #1 spot for the French Bulldog, ending a 31 year consecutive reign for Labrador Retrievers. The AKC touted the new title holders intellect and size as reasons for a 1000% increase in registrations since 2012, where the Frenchie was ranked at #14 on the most popular pooch list.
Michigan offers some interesting climate challenges for breads like the French Bulldog, as its compact stature doesn't help it to navigate snow when they need to do their business. The Frenchie's short hair also means you'll be dressing that dog up every time you take out in the winter.
A Pure Michigan winter calls for a thicker coat and a love of the outdoors. So what breeds are The Mitten States Favorite? According to Readers Digest, here are the top 4 breeds in Michigan:
The Labrador Retriever. Look at that face. Labs are some of the most loyal, outgoing and energetic dogs out there, which makes them perfect for Michigan! They love to swim, chase anything that runs, and make their humans happy.
The German Shepard has to be one of the most loyal breeds out there. Very trainable and eager to please, but they can be handful (like every breed) when they aren't given the attention and exercise they need. Thick coats and a love for any season make these puppies great for The Mitten State.
Golden Retrievers are the durable comedian of dogs. They are playful, smart and expressive! Not nearly as expressive as our next dog though:
If you've ever owned, known someone who has one, or lived within a mile of one you know Huskies are talkative! Built for the snow, bursting with energy and personality these dogs love every season in Michigan.
Of course any dog breed can call Michigan home with the right care and attention. If you are looking for a dog to join your family, you'll find a new friend with some or all of the qualities that make a perfect match for Michigan and for you and your family at the Capital Area Humane Society. Please don't shop, adopt.
