As Prices Soar in Michigan, One Extravagance Sees Sales Increase
Been to the grocery store lately? With the skyrocketing cost of daily essentials, you'd assume Michigan folks would cut back on unnecessary expenses. But no, Michiganders are still happily shelling out their hard-earned cash for overpriced cups of coffee that they could easily make at home or grab for a fraction of the price at a gas station. It's almost like we can't live without our daily dose of liquid joy, even if it does cost more than a gallon of gas.

Despite tightening wallets, coffee consumption is soaring. According to the National Coffee Association (imagine how caffeinated that office must be), daily sips have reached a 20-year high, with a nearly 40% increase since 2004. It seems the "little treat" culture has taken over, with 57% of Americans indulging in specialty coffee drinks in the past week. While I occasionally enjoy a Frappuccino or cappuccino, I'd much prefer the taste and, more importantly, the price of a gas station cup of coffee or make it at home.
Coffee Shops Thriving in Michigan's Cash-Strapped Michigan Economy
While higher grocery costs have forced us to make tough spending choices (like swapping Lucky Charms for Wizards Treats), coffee shops are racking it in. A report from Placer.ai reveals that visits to major coffee chains like Dutch Brothers, Dunkin', and Michigan's own Biggby Coffee rose by 5.1% in the first five months of 2024.
The big caffeine players are seizing the moment by expanding. Biggby Coffee wants to expand its footprint beyond the Midwest, aiming for cities like Boise and Memphis. Dutch Brothers, which already has a firm foothold in the South, is looking to add 165 locations this year.
The Steady Rise of "Treat Culture" and Quick Coffee Fixes in Michigan
The hybrid work model is fueling our coffee craze in Michigan. As people slowly return to offices, coffee shops see increased foot traffic. Starbucks has taken notice of this trend, with 21% of their customers grabbing a cup of coffee before heading into the office so far in 2024, up from 18.6% in 2022.

The quick coffee stop trend continues to rise. At Starbucks, the percentage of early morning visits under 10 minutes increased from 64.3% in 2022 to 68.7% in 2024. Dunkin' shows a similar pattern, especially in the Midwest, where 50.9% of visits last less than 5 minutes.

So, despite higher costs and tighter budgets, Michiganders remain steadfast in their love of coffee. Michigan will find a way to justify its caffeine fix, whether it's a venti Frappuccino, an Iced Carmel Cappuccino, or a simple brewed coffee.
