Why are catalytic converters so valuable? Because these exhaust-cleaning gizmos contain rare metals like platinum, palladium, and rhodium. They're like your car's 'bling,' except unlike your princess cut diamond, they're stashed under your vehicle, just waiting for someone with a cordless saw to swipe it.

And while the street value of a catalytic converter will net criminals a few hundred bucks, you'll be out up to $3,000 to replace it. It's like trading a lobster dinner for a gas station sandwich. But, according to LansingAttorniey.com, if someone is caught red-handed trying to steal one, they'll face up to $10,000 in fines and up to 5 years in prison if convicted.

Where Thieves Strike

Catalytic converter theft hotspots include ride-share parking lots, business lots, and any poorly lit area where your car is left alone for more than a minute. Your car could be a thief's next payday if you're not watching or taking steps to avoid being a target. Here's what you can do to avoid becoming a victim, according to the Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services (DIFS):

  • Install anti-theft devices: These make the process a lot less fun for thieves
  • Park in a garage: If you don't have one, consider motion-sensor lights
  • Mark your converter: A splash of spray paint could make it less appealing

Ultimately, it's a game of hide-and-seek, but the stakes are your hard-earned cash. And if your convertor does end up missing, be sure to notify law enforcement and your insurance company and consider upgrading your security.
