Buying a house is a monumental task regardless of which state you are in. Doing the research, bidding your time, and hopefully jumping when the time is right.

In Michigan, the average price of a home, according to real estate site Redfin.com, is around $250,000. That's a pretty sizeable chunk of change, so let's take a look at how far your investment will go in 3 different Michigan cities: Grand Rapids, Jackson, and Lansing.

How Much Home Does $250K Buy in Grand Rapids, Jackson, and Lansing

To keep things equal I tried to find the best bang for the buck in each city using Zillow.com. My goal was to find a move-in ready home that could handle a family of 4. Let's start off in Lansing.

Zillow lists this Lansing 3 bedroom, 4 bath home, with 1,998 square feet, and built in 1965 at $249,999. It has some newer appliances in an open kitchen that leads right into a living room with vaulted ceilings. Personally, I'm not a fan of the wood paneling, so that would be one of the first things to go.

There is a ton of space and a great floor plan to work with, but I'd also be curious if there's hardwood under that carpet. This house gives me ski lodge vibes.

Next up we have this house in Grand Rapids listed at $245,000 on Zillow. It has 2,610 square feet, 4 bedrooms and 2 baths. This split-level home has an updated kitchen and a garage. There may be 2,610 square feet, but this house feels a bit cramped. May sacrifice a bedroom for larger living spaces.

This Grand Rapids home sits on a 10,454-square-foot lot and even has a fireplace. Even better, this house has only had 2 owners since it was built in 1949, so it looks like the last owners gave it a ton of updates.

Now we take that same budget to Jackson, where you can get this 2,898 square-foot, 4 bed, 4 bath home that sits on an 8,712 square foot lot, for $229,900. This brownstone was built in 1939 and features an extravagant entranceway complete with a spiral staircase to make a grand entrance.
