There are a significant number of Michiganders that have yet to be vaccinated for one reason or another. Ohio recently set up their vax-a-million program doing weekly million dollar drawings every week. Now Michigan is getting in on the vaccination encouragement with our MI Shot to Win Sweepstakes, with a chance to win up to 2 million dollars or one of nine college scholarships. If you are 18 or older and you’ve had at least one dose of the vaccine you can enter the sweepstakes. There will be 32 cash prizes equalling a value of 5 million dollars.

Now if you fall in the age group of 12-17 years olds, you could win one of 5 $55,000 scholarships, which can be used for tuition and mandatory fees for a college or university. Funding for the sweepstakes are provided by federal covid relief money. This effort is actually being operated by Meijer and the United Way, not by our Michigan government. The goal obviously is to increase awareness and safety of the vaccines that are available, and to increase our vaccinated rates to at least 70%.

“This sweepstakes gives every Michigander who’s been vaccinated a shot to win cash or college scholarships,” Whitmer said in a prepared statement. “It’s also a great way to encourage more Michiganders to get the safe and effective vaccine so you can protect yourself, your family, and help get life back to normal. If we all roll up our sleeves and do our part, we can all win big. Let’s get to work!”

So far Michigan has seen 56.5% of our residents 12 and older get at least one dose of the vaccine. Vaccinations in our nation have drastically slowed down. The program in Ohio is doing well, increasing vaccinations among 16 and 17 year olds by 94%, 45% among 18-19 year olds, and 55% among those 20 to 49. “If there’s one thing every Michigander can agree on, it’s that whatever Ohio can do, Michigan can do it better and bigger,” Whitmer said in a press release.
