140th Anniversary of the Lansing Capitol Building
This year marks the Lansing State Capitol building's 140th anniversary...it was constructed from 1872 - 1878 and dedicated on January 1, 1879.
The current capitol is actually our third capitol building. The first was a brick building in Detroit; the second was a small wood building in downtown Lansing.
SOME FAST FACTS ABOUT THE BUILDING:
The architect was Elijah E. Myers.
267 feet tall, from the ground to the tip of the dome.
Restoration was from 1989-1992 and rededicated on November 19, 1992.
It was lit with gas lamps.
There are 457 million-year-old fossils in the floors.
