While Others Close, This Houghton Lake Amusement Park Has Thrived Since 1969
With hundreds of Michigan amusement parks and areas that have permanently closed down for the past 100+ years, it’s refreshing to find an amusement park that has remained open and continuously enjoyed by thousands.
It’s Lakeland Recreation, located at Houghton Lake on 6979 W. Houghton Lake Drive.
Lakeland goes back to 1969 and has – seriously – something for everybody:
Arcade games
Batting cages
Bazooka guns
Go-karts
Haunted mansion
Kicker’s challenge
Kiddie rides
Moonwalk bounce house
Mini-golf
Party Room
Water smashers

It is a welcome sight when you visit Houghton Lake during a Michigan roadtrip and come across this place. So many others have turned into weedy fields, abandoned junkyards, and parking lots, while Lakeland has survived ever since it opened in 1969...almost 60 years ago.
So now you are hip to this place, especially if you are traveling with the kids and you want a fun place to take them so they can stop whining “I’m bored! I wanna go home!” in the car.
Have fun this summer!
