Michigan winter is back. And it brought friends. This bitter cold is thanks to La Niña and the polar vortex acting like a tag team trying out for the WWE. If you're unfamiliar, La Niña is the ocean pattern that reroutes cold air straight into Michigan like a GPS set to "ruin your week." The polar vortex is that blob of Arctic air that normally behaves itself way up north, but this year it's decided to take a stroll south... and is currently kicking its feet up in Michigan.

Why Michigan Is So Cold Right Now

Together, they've created a cold that feels personal to Michiganders. This isn't going to be a quick cold snap either. We're talking waves of Arctic air. Plural. A cold blast shows up, leaves, and then comes back to steal your blanket and throw snow on you. USA Today reports that late January is the worst of it, but the National Weather Service (NWS) is giving early February the side eye for what it predicts is coming for Michigan.

These frigid temps and below zero windchills might hang out in Michigan long enough that your car might not start out of spite, your dog will rethink its outdoor habits, and your furnace will be working so hard it will ask for a raise.

Lake Effect Snow Outlook

What about snow? Michigan will do Michigan things. Lake effect snow will pop up more often thanks to La Niña bringing her festive winter confetti to the party, and you'll be late to work because someone forgot four-wheel-drive doesn't mean four-wheel-brakes.

When Relief Could Arrive

Is there hope? Yes — eventually. Toward mid-to-late February, the polar vortex and La Niña's partnership will dissolve, but that doesn't mean it will get warm. Just less brutal. Until then, welcome to Pure Michigan, where winter builds character — whether you asked for it or not.
