The Various Mascots of Kellogg’s Sugar Smacks, Battle Creek

Kellogg’s and Post are, in my opinion, the two most popular cereal brands in the country, and they originate from right here in Michigan – Battle Creek, to be exact. But who doesn’t already know that?

This time around, I’m spotlighting one of Kellogg’s most famous cereals.

Sugar Smacks was introduced around 1953, a sugar-sweet, puffed wheat cereal that ended up having the highest sugar content of any other breakfast food.

Naturally, over the years as nitpicking was on the rise, Kellogg’s dropped the word “sugar” from the name in 1981, in an effort to downplay the sugar content, re-naming it “Honey Smacks”. Ridiculous, as honey was such a tiny ingredient, with sugar being the overwhelming one.

Later that decade, the word "Honey" was axed from the name and for a few years the cereal was known as simply "Smacks". The name went back to "Honey Smacks" in 2004.

Since the cereal made its debut in 1953, there seems to have been trouble deciding what mascot to use on the box. Post Cereals’ similar food, ‘Sugar Crisp’, has retained the same mascot, Sugar Bear, for years. But Kellogg’s just couldn’t decide on a keeper of their own for Sugar Smacks.

1965: The Sugar Smacks legend says there was a brief mascot called “The Smackin’ Bandit”, a type of weird animal that liked going around kissing everyone. So far, no image of this creature is available.
