What Is Polygamy?

Britannica says that polygamy is

"marriage to more than one spouse at a time. The most typical forms of polygamy have been polygyny, in which cowives share a husband, or polyandry, in which cohusbands share a wife.

Similar but without the commitment of marriage is polyamory, having or desiring multiple intimate relationships at the same time with the full knowledge and consent of all parties involved."

So before you decide to get married to multiple people, find out whether it is legal in Michigan.

Did You Know That You Can Be A Felon For Marrying Multiple People In Michigan?

If you did not know about this, now you can say that you have.

In the Michigan Legislature 750.439, it is all laid out for you.

"Any person who has a former husband or wife living, who shall marry another person, or shall continue to cohabit with such second husband or wife, in this state, he or she shall, except in the cases mentioned herein, be guilty of the crime of polygamy, a felony."

Also, "teaching, soliciting, and advocating polygamy" is considered a felony as well.

"Teaching, soliciting and advocating the practice of polygamy—Any person who shall solicit to a polygamous life, or teach polygamy as a correct form of family life, for the purpose of inducing men and women to enter into the practice of polygamy or advocate the doctrine and practice of polygamy, or attempt to persuade any person by private or public discourse to adopt a polygamous life, shall be guilty of a felony."

While it is illegal to try to remarry while still married in Michigan, remarriage is not restricted once your divorce is finalized.

It is illegal in all 50 states to commit polygamy.
