I don't get to the movies as often as I used to, but I actually made a trip to Studio C in Okemos recently to see Super Troopers 3.

That's my kind of humor. I'm not saying I'm proud of it. I'm just saying I laughed.

Now I'm especially glad I went, because Studio C has announced it'll close for good on October 4 after 14 years near Meridian Mall.

Studio C in Okemos Is Closing After 14 Years

Studio C opened in 2012, and if you've been there, you know it wasn't exactly the old-school movie theater experience.

Studio C Helped Change the Movie Experience

This was Celebration Cinema's testing ground for some of the things that eventually became pretty standard at theaters — including those big, comfortable recliners. Studio C was the company's first location to offer them.

And once you've watched a movie from a recliner, it's pretty hard to go back.

Studio C also offered fresh popcorn and other concessions, plus a full-service bar with beer, wine and cocktails. You could even rent out the theater for a birthday, corporate event, or your own private screening.

Why Is Studio C in Okemos Closing?

Celebration Cinema says it decided not to renew its lease, explaining that the economics of operating a smaller theater on leased property with higher fixed expenses just aren't viable anymore. The company says it's choosing instead to reinvest in theater properties it owns.

What Happens to C Rewards and VIP Memberships?

If you've got C Rewards or a VIP membership, those will still be honored at the Celebration Cinema location on Edgewood Blvd. in Lansing, as well as the company's nine other locations around West and Central Michigan.

Still, it's a bummer to lose another longtime entertainment option around Lansing.

I'm just glad I got one more visit in before the credits roll for good.
